The Hays High softball team split a doubleheader at home against Garden City Tuesday. Garden City used a four-run fourth inning on their way to an 8-2 win in the first game and the Riley Dreher homered as the Indians bounced back with a win in game two 5-1.
GAME 1: Garden City 8, Hays 2
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning the Indians
plated a pair of runs taking a 2-1 lead.
Riley Dreher tied the game with an RBI double with one out and then on the second straight dropped third strike of the inning Dreher scored on a passed ball putting Hays up 2-1.
But the lead was short-lived when the Buffaloes added a run in the top of the second tying the game at two.
Garden City built on their lead with a four-run fourth and two more in the seventh on their way to the 8-2 win.
Dreher collected a pair of hits for the Indians.
Aubree Thomas suffered the loss for Hays High. She allowed six runs, two earned on six hits with nine strikeouts in four innings.
GAME 2: Hays 5, Garden City 1
The Indians scored three runs in the bottom of the first
inning and that was all they needed to win game two of the doubleheader as
starter Aubree Thomas allowed just one run in the victory.
After back-to-back singles to open the bottom of the first, Riley Dreher cleared the bases with one swing, a three-run homerun, putting Hays up 3-0.
Thomas scored a run on a passed ball, with the bases loaded in the third as Hays High took a 4-0 lead.
After Garden City scored a run in the fourth, the Indians added a fifth run in the bottom of the sixth on a passed ball on their way to the 5-1 victory.
Thomas allowed just one run on five hits with 11 strikeouts in a complete game victory.
Thomas and Dezarae Schmidt each collected a pair of hits and Dreher drove in three for the Indians.
The Indians will host Great Bend on Tuesday.
