Elizabeth Marie "Betty" Honas

Elizabeth Marie "Betty" Honas, age 88, of Ellis, Kansas, passed away on March 20, 2024, at Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital in WaKeeney. She was born on March 7, 1936, on the family farm in Ellis County, Kansas, to John and Rosie (Geschwentner) Gaschler. Betty graduated from Ellis High School in 1954. She married Oscar Honas on May 9, 1955, in Ellis, who preceded her in death on February 10, 2017.

Betty was a dedicated homemaker and a faithful member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. She found joy in various activities, including trips to the casino in Dodge City and occasional scratch-off lottery tickets. She cherished watching Gunsmoke and her soap operas with her family, and during those times, she made it clear not to disturb her. Known for her caregiving nature, Betty was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

She treasured spending time with family and friends hosting gatherings at the family home playing cards, especially during holidays. Betty looked forward to visits with her brothers, her summer trips to her sister Freda's home in Fort Collins, Colorado, and visits to her sister Aggie's home in Junction City.

Betty is survived by her son, Stan "Buck" Honas, and daughter, Sandy Honas, both of Ellis, as well as her grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Molly Kohl and husband Jamie, along with children Jamison and Jett, all of Heston, Kansas; Cody Honas and wife Megan, along with children Hunter, Breckyn, Brielle, and Brynlee, all of Ellis; Devin Jacques and wife Shelby, along with children Johanna and Colton, all of Ellis; and Brady Jacques and wife Sydney of Ellis.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Oscar, a daughter-in-law, Julie Honas, three brothers, Joe, Richard, and Clarence Gaschler, and three sisters, Freda Dreiling, Aggie Schuster, and Bert Honas.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ellis, with inurnment to follow in the church cemetery. A memorial visitation will take place from 9:30 AM to 10:00 AM, with a rosary at 10:00 AM, all on Wednesday at the church.
