TOPEKA – An illness-depleted Hays High boys’ swim squad placed 10th at the Topeka West Invitational Tuesday but was still able to qualify two more relay teams for state.
Seniors Chase Zadina and Karsen Flaska and junior Cedric Durr were all part of two relay teams that turned in state-qualifying times.
Those three also are members of the 200y freestyle relay squad that qualified for state earlier this season.
Tuesday, they joined freshman Jace Herbers for a time of 1minute, 51.81 second in the 200y medley relay to finish fourth overall.
Then in the final race of the day, senior Mason Desaire completed the foursome on the 400y freestyle relay that turned in a state-qualifying time of 3:42.42, good enough for third place.
Desaire also is the final member of that 200y freestyle relay team that has already qualified for the season finale, Feb. 19-21 in Lenexa.
Zadina (seventh, 50y freestyle) and Durr (100y freestyle) also placed in the top eight in individual events in the 15-team event, one of the largest regular-season meets of the year for Hays High.
The Indians now prepare for their home meet, set for Tuesday, January 20, at Fort Hays State University.
