Hays USD 489 school district officials are requesting a variance in the sign height and square feet for a larger than normal monument sign at 2300 E. 13th. The new Hays High/Middle School buildings are set back further than typical from the street for institutional or commercial buildings.
A larger sign is necessary to maintain adequate visibility and scale for motorists approaching the site.
Under current regulations for monument signs in public and institutional zoning district, the maximum allowable sign area is 36 square feet, and the maximum height is 12 feet. USD 489 is requesting a sign area of 81.75 square feet and a total height of 13 feet 10 inches.
A rezoning request will be held Monday, July 21 at 4 p.m. in Hays City Hall by the Hays Area Board of Zoning Appeals.
