WAKEENEY – The TMP-Marian Monarchs returned to Mid-Continent League action Tuesday night on the road in WaKeeney and earned a doubleheader sweep of the Trego Golden Eagles.
GIRLS: TMP 38, Trego 35
The TMP Lady Monarchs (7-9, 3-2 MCL) rallied from down 11 in the second
half and Brooke Koenigsman scored the final 17 points for the Monarchs as they
come away with the 38-35 win Tuesday in WaKeeney.
The two teams were evenly matched to open the game with three ties and seven lead changes in the first quarter as Trego (9-4, 3-1 MCL) built a 9-8 lead after one quarter.
TMP’s Claire Schippers gave the Monarchs a 10-9 lead to open the second quarter only to see Trego storm right back and outscore TMP 10-3 to close out the first half, giving Trego a 19-13 halftime lead.
Trego extended their lead to open the second half, eventually building an 11-point lead, at 27-16 with just under two and a half minutes to play in the third quarter.
TMP answered in a big way over the final 10 plus minutes of the game though.
The Monarchs outscored Trego 22-8 over the time and Brooke Koenigsman scored the final 17 points for TMP, including back-to-back three pointers with less than two minutes left to put TMP on top for good as they picked up the 38-35 victory.
Koenigsman led all scorers with a career-high 24 points and added 13 rebounds.
Claire Schippers added eight for TMP.
BOYS: TMP 54, Trego 44
The TMP boys put an ended to a two-game losing streak as
they led for all but four minutes and 12 seconds Tuesday on their way to a 54-44
victory.
Trego opened the game with an early 6-2 lead but five quick points from TMP, including a three pointer from Carson Liles, gave TMP the lead with just over 4:10 to play in the first half, that put TMP up 8-6. And the Monarchs never trailed again.
TMP extended their lead to 15-10 after the first quarter.
Freshman Ari Patel scored six of his career-high 11 points in the second quarter as TMP extended their lead to 30-22 at halftime.
In the second half TMP built a 13 point lead to close out the third quarter and while Trego was able to cut the lead inside of 10 on severl occations the Monarchs were able to close out the 54-44 victory.
Ty Schmeidler led all scorers for TMP 15 points and Will Eck added nine points.
TMP will host Smith Center on Friday night.
