TOPEKA, Kan. – Fort Hays State was on the short end of its final two contests at the Washburn Invitational on Sunday. The Tigers fell 2-0 to Winona State and 6-2 to St. Cloud State. FHSU moved to 9-5 overall on the season. Winona State moved to 9-2 after the contest with FHSU and St. Cloud State is now 9-4.
Winona State 2, Fort Hays State 0
After getting shutout their second game Saturday, the Tiger bats struggled once again in run-scoring opportunities. FHSU had chances with runners in scoring position in the first and seventh innings, but could not push across a run.
Savanah Egger took another tough-luck complete game loss, allowing just two runs in her third start of the weekend. She allowed a leadoff homer to WSU in the first and then a two-out RBI double in the third produced the second run. Otherwise, she scattered just four hits with a walk and struck out seven. Egger is now 5-2 on the season. The Tigers have gone scoreless offensively in her last 15.1 innings of work.
Izzy Howe threw a complete-game shutout for the Warriors, allowing four hits also with two walks and five strikeouts.
St. Cloud State 6, Fort Hays State 2
Fort Hays State took an early lead with a run in the second, but St. Cloud State used three home runs to power its way to a 6-2 win in the final game of the weekend. Two home runs in the bottom of the second flipped the score to a 4-1 SCSU advantage and the Huskies led for the remainder of the game. FHSU cut the lead to 4-2 in the top of the fifth, but SCSU got the run back in the bottom half of the inning and then added its final run in the sixth.
Carly Stuke put the Tigers in the lead in the second with a solo home run. In the fifth Emily Mayer doubled and came in to score on a sacrifice fly RBI by Lilliana Ramirez-Johnson. The Tigers had just five hits in the game, all by different players.
Emma Eickhoff threw a complete game for the Huskies. She finished with three strikeouts and allowed two walks. Eickhoff moved to 4-1 on the season.
Morgan Schmidt threw the first 1.1 inning for the Tigers, allowing four runs before handing the ball to Bailey Carlson who threw the final 4.2 innings. Schmidt had two strikeouts and Carlson had one.
The Tigers now prepare for a mid-week trip out to Denver this coming Wednesday for a doubleheader at MSU Denver. The games start at 12 p.m. (1 p.m. Central Time).
