HAYS - Hays High scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to break up a tie game for a 7-4 win over Garden City on Tuesday. The Indians improve to 4-2 overall and 4-0 in Western Athletic Conference play and have won four straight over Garden City who dropped to 3-2 and 0-1 in the WAC.
Hays answered three Garden City runs in the top of the third with three of their own in the bottom of the same inning. The Indians took their first lead with a single run in the bottom of the fourth.
Garden City answered back with a single tally in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 4-4.
Haley Rees, Avery Solida and Lauren Klein each recorded one out singles to load the bases in the bottom of the sixth. Rees stole home to put Hays ahead 5-4. Dani Willeford drove in Klein and Dezarae Schmidt for the final runs.
Riley Dreher worked around two runners in the top of the seventh for the complete game victory. Dreher allowed four runs on six hits. Just one of the runs were earned. She struck out even and walked three.
Rees, Klein and Solida each recorded two hits. Schmidt, Rees and Klein each scored two runs for the Indians who scored in three separate innings.
Hays travels to Dodge City for four games this Friday and Saturday. They will face Wichita Northwest and Derby on Friday then Goddard-Eisenhower and Maize South on Saturday.
