HAYS - The TMP-Marian girls and boys basketball teams have advanced to the quarterfinals of the Mid-Continent League tournament.
GIRLS: TMP 65, Hill City 13
The Lady Monarchs (4-4, 2-1 MCL) used a couple of really big runs, lead wire-to-wire and with a continuous clock in the fourth quarter the Monarchs earned the 65-13.
TMP鈥檚 Brooke Koenigsman scored five of her team-high 13 points in the first quarter as the Monarchs built 15-5 first quarter run.
The Monarchs held the Ringnecks scoreless in the second quarter while racking up 21 points. TMP led 36-5 at halftime.
The Monarchs defense allowed just two points in the third quarter to the Ringnecks (0-8, 0-5) and took a 52-9 lead into the final frame.
With the running clock in the fourth the Monarchs went on to pick up the 65-13 victory.
Koenigsman and Hill City鈥檚 Riley Minium finished with a game-high 13 each.
Every Monarch player who got into the game scored.
TMP will travel to Oakley on Tuesday to take on the Plainsmen in the MCL tournament quarterfinals.
BOYS: TMP 55, Russell 51
The final game of night was a game of scoring runs that saw TMP dominated the final minutes in a 55-51 come from behind win.
Ty Schmeider had five of TMP鈥檚 seven points in the first quarter and Russell鈥檚 Mason Rohr scored all seven.
Later in the quarter, TMP鈥檚 Caden Dinkel tied the game at seven with a driving layup and sparked a 17-0 run to end the first and begin the second quarter putting TMP up 22-7.
Schmeidler scored eight straight during that run and finished with 13 points.
Despite the big lead, the Monarchs could not hold on to it and Russell put together 11-0 pulling themselves back within four points at 22-18.
TMP found themselves clinging to a 25-18 lead into halftime.
Jacob Seib owned the third quarter for the Monarchs scoring 14 straight points as TMP built a 39-27 lead.
Down 12, Russell began to chip away at the TMP lead and they came storming back t0 take a 47-42 lead thanks to a 20-3 run.
Trailing 47-42 the Monarchs finished the game on a 13-4 run as they clenched a 55-52 victory.
Seib finished six-for-six at the free thrown line the fourth quarter to clinch the TMP win.
Seib led all-scorers with a career-high 22 points.
TMP will travel to Norton Monday to face the Bluejays in the quarterfinals of the MCL tournament.
