DE SOTO, Kan. - Two big innings doomed the Hays High baseball team Friday in De Soto. Spring Hill scored eight runs in the top of the seventh Indians 11-3 loss to the Broncos. De Soto scored 10 runs in the bottom of the bottom of the fourth in the Wilccats 14-1 victory..
The Indians drop to 4-10 on the season. They return to Western Athletic Conference play Thursday with a doubleheader in Liberal.
Spring Hill 11, Hays 3
Spring Hill broke open a close game with an eight-run seventh inning to defeat Hays 11-3. All eight runs came with two outs. After back-to-back errors extended the inning, the Broncos got a double and home run to take the lead.
The Indians committed six errors in the game, four of them in the final frame.
The Broncos jumped out early, scoring twice in the first inning then added a run in the second for a 3-0 lead. Hays rallied with a run in the bottom of the third on a Kal Lonsdale RBI double to left. The Indians capitalized on two errors to score twice in the fifth and tie the game 3-3.
Starter Cade Jennings allowed six runs (two earned) on 10 hits with four walks and two strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings and suffered the loss.
De Soto 14, Hays 1 (5 innings)
The Wildcats scored 10 runs in the bottom of the fifth for the 14-1 run-rule victory.
The Indians grabbed the lead with a run in the first on a Jace Dreher sacrifice fly.
De Soto answered with two in the second and two in the third. The first 11 batters reached safely in the decisive fourth. They took advantage of four walks along with seven singles and a double.
Starter Alex Hillebrand allowed eight runs on six hits with six walks and no strikeouts over 3 innings and took the loss.
