Shirley (Coker) Stein

Shirley (Coker) Stein, 88, died Thursday, July 29, 2021 at the Hodgeman County Health Center, Jetmore.

Shirley was born the daughter of Walter and Anna (Fercking) Coker on February 1, 1933 in Ness City, Kansas, where she also graduated high school.  She later married Melvin J. Stein on November 3,1953 in Ness City and moved to Spearville, where she became a lifelong resident.  She devoted her life to being a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.  In retirement she enjoyed working at the Spearville Mercantile, creating the most beautiful embroidery and much beloved baby blankets and quilts for all her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Shirley was a very active member of St. John Baptist Church where she volunteered for various duties including eucharistic minister, rosary leader, prayer chain member and funeral dinner volunteer.  She was a member of the Daughters of Isabella, the Happy Knot Tiers and a volunteer driver assisting others in the community.  She was a valued blood donor for the American Red Cross where she donated 102 pints.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin in 2011, 3 sisters, Helen Schraeder, Rebecca Kolbeck and Phyllis Schuette, 4 brothers, Raymond, Martin, John, and Donald Coker and 2 grandchildren-in-law, Roch Miller II and Taylor Stein.

Visitation will be Monday August 2 from noon to 4:00 pm at Ziegler Funeral Chapel, Dodge City.  Vigil service and Daughters of Isabella rosary will follow at 7:00 pm, St. John the Baptist Church, Spearville.  Funeral Mass will be 10:00 am Tuesday at the church with Fr. John Forkuoh presiding.  Burial will follow in St. John Cemetery, Spearville.
