Mary Ann Mermis, age 80, of Hays, Kansas died Monday, December 27, 2021, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.  She was born August 20, 1941 in Hays, Kansas to Jacob C. and Sophia (VonLintel) Stecklein.  She married Vernon J. “Vernie” Mermis on May 14, 1960 at Munjor, Kansas.  He preceded her in death on May 1, 2006.

She and her husband owned and operated Vernie’s Hamburger House in Hays since 1969.  She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and a homemaker.  Mary Ann grew up on the farm North of Munjor, attended Munjor Grade School, and was a 1959 graduate of Girls Catholic High School in Hays.  She enjoyed cooking, gardening, embroidering, reading and trips to the casinos.  Mary Ann was an avid fan of the KC Royals and KU Jayhawk basketball.  Her pride and joy was spending time with her grandkids and family.

Survivors include her daughters, Debbie Braun and husband, Jim; Sondra Klaus and husband, Neil; Bonnie Mermis; Jennifer Mermis and husband, Keith; all of Hays, KS; her brothers, George Stecklein and wife, Juleen, Hays, KS; Jude Stecklein and wife, Rachel, Sylvan Grove, KS; ten grandchildren, Renae Unrein (Lance); Jason Braun; Andrea Braun; Adam Klaus; Amber Albers (Kord); Tanner Mermis; Conner Mermis; Preston Mermis; Nick Mermis; Haley Mermis; three great grandchildren, Macy Unrein; Miley Unrein and Kolson Albers.  She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 A.M. Friday, December 31, 2021, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 18th & Vine Hays, Kansas with Father Elias Chinzara officiating.  Burial will be in Saint Joseph Cemetery, Hays, Kansas.

A vigil service and rosary will be at 6:30 P.M. Thursday, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Thursday, and from 9:00 to 9:45 A.M. Friday, all at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22nd Street, Hays, Kansas 67601.

The family suggests memorials to Immaculate Heart of Mary Building Fund, TMP-Marian High School or Hospice of Hays Medical Center in care of the mortuary.
