JUNCTION CITY - Hays High soccer was finally able to take a break from the always-tough Western Athletic Conference.
Despite feeling the effects of a 1-0 overtime loss to Class 6A power Dodge City two days earlier, Hays High still came away with a 5-2 non-league road victory over Junction City Thursday.
The opponents helped out the Indians with two own goals, lifting HHS to a 3-1 halftime lead.
Hays High then outscored JC 2-1 in the second half to account for the final score.
Senior Ivan Maldonado provided two of the Indians' goals to raise his total to 18 for the season, while classmate Camden Luck scored one goal.
HHS (6-3-2 overall, 2-2-1 WAC) returns to conference action next week with a home game Tuesday vs. Liberal and a road match Thursday at Garden City.
The Indians are currently second in the WAC standings behind Dodge City, which is unbeaten in conference play.
