
Elizabeth A. “Betty” (Moellering) Feldt, 95, Hays, died Friday, February 21, 2025 at HaysMed.
She was born June 29, 1929 in Salina, the daughter of John M. and Elizabeth F. (Robben) Moellering. Betty was raised on the family farm a few miles north of Angelus, Kansas, and she received her education at school in Angelus. On June 2, 1948 she was united in marriage to John M. Feldt in Angelus, and they lived near Park until they moved to Hays in early 1952. They celebrated 57 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on November 2, 2007. Betty was a homemaker and a Boy Scout den mother until 1962 when John and she opened up their own business, Johnnies Skelly gas station and later, Johnnies Radiator and Auto Repair. She managed the office and bookkeeping at both places. Later on, she spent many years working at Al’s Chickenette. She loved to visit with the customers.
Her hobbies were participating in a Gospel singing group that sang at local rest homes, delivering the Holy Sacrament to shut-ins at home, eating and visiting with other seniors at the Hays Senior Center, and tending to her garden, raising blackberries and flowers on the farm. She also loved and took care of many cats through the years.
Survivors include her daughter, Joan Stekoll and husband Bernard of Wichita, three sons, Mike Feldt and John Feldt and wife Josephine, all of Hays, and Don Feldt of Wichita, a daughter-in-law, Linda Feldt of Augusta, two brothers, John Moellering and wife Elaine of Grinnell and Bernie Moellering of Oakley, a sister-in-law, Alverta Moellering of Hoxie, five grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild, Jackie Brown and husband Eric of Hays and their three sons Anthony, Justin, and Michael, Chris Feldt and wife Kim of Ellis and their son Liam, Megan Maska and husband Brandon and their three children Brinley, Bowen, and Brody, Jennifer Sullivan and husband Brian, and Erika Mitchell and wife Melinda and their son Ethan Montano and his son Dominic.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a son, Robert Feldt, five sisters, Marie and husband Fred Schwarz, Emelyn and husband Bill Broeckelman, Frances and husband George Schwarz, Estella and husband Gus Jueneman, and Jean and husband Dick Dempewolf, and two brothers, Reynold and wife Hilda Moellering and Robert Moellering.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Thursday, February 27, 2025 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Fr. Fred Gatschet officiating. Burial will be at 2:00 pm in the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery in WaKeeney. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on Wednesday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Thursday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home. A vigil service and rosary will be at 6:30 pm on Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Humane Society of the High Plains or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
