Hays is under both a high wind and red flag warning today, according to the National Weather Service.

The high wind warning is in effect until 6 p.m. today for Trego, Ellis, Scott, Lane, Ness, Rush, Hamilton, Kearny, Finney, Hodgeman, Pawnee, Stafford, Gray, Ford and Edwards counties.

Northwest winds are expected to be 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 65 mph.

Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles.

Remain in the lower levels of your home during the windstorm, and avoid windows. Watch for falling debris and tree limbs. Use caution if you must drive, the National Weather Service advises.

The red flag warning is also in effect until 6 p.m. today.

The combination of strong winds and low afternoon relative humidity will result in critical wildfire danger today across southwest and central Kansas, according to the National Weather Service.

Relative humidity may be as low as 15%. Any fire that develops will catch and spread quickly. Outdoor burning is not recommended, the National Weather Service said.

The high in Hays today is forecast at 49 degrees. The weekend forecast is for highs in the lower 50s and sunny. Winds should diminish.
