The Great Bend Recreation Commission is working with the Kansas Wetlands Education Center this fall for a new program called “Marsh Under the Moon.” Many citizens have seen Cheyenne Bottoms in the daytime, but this event will allow participants to experience the wetlands as the sun goes down.
GBRC
Enrichment Director Garet Fitzpatrick said the evening will include spider
sniffing, bat detection and checking out the eye shine of various wetland
animals.
"We've talked about this for a few years but this year we're going with it," said Fitzpatrick. "It'll be a Friday evening and we'll roast marshmallows in fire pits. We'll do a number of activities, including glow-in-the-dark games."
Much of the program will be outdoors, so participants are asked to wear
closed-toed shoes. The program at KWEC will take place from 6-9 p.m. on Oct. 15 for children ages 6-12 accompanied by an adult.
Pre-registration is required by Oct. 12.
Visit greatbendrec.com, stop by 1214 Stone Street or call 620-793-3755 to register. The fee is $10 and enrollment is limited to 15 participants.
"Hopefully this will be a good program for us to build on in the future," said Fitzpatrick.
