HAYS – The Hays High Indians split their first two games at the Western Plains Diamond Classic Friday at Leao-Harper Field. The Indians dropped their opener 10-2 to Manhattan but came back and run-ruled Life Prep Academy 20-5 in four innings in the night cap.
The Indians have won four of their last five games and improved to 8-11 on the season. They will wrap up Diamond Classic play Saturday against TMP-Marian Saturday at 12:15 p.m.
Manhattan 10, Hays 2
Manhattan scored two runs in the fourth to break a 1-1 tie then added five in the
fifth and two in the sixth to pull away.
Hays took the early lead with a run in the bottom of the first when Kal Lonsdale scored on an error.
The Indians scored their second run in the sixth on Paxton Shaw single.
Brett Rhoades allowed eight runs on eight hits with four walks and two strikeouts and took the loss.
Hays 20, Life Prep Academy 5 (4 innings)
Cason Hardman had four singles, drove in three runs and scored four times.
Brett Rhoades added three hits and Nash Kaiser drove in three runs.
The Indians took the lead for good with six runs in the second inning. The first run came on a wild pitch. Kaleb Roe singled to the left side of the infield, Kal Lonsdale laid down a sacrifice bunt, Jace Dreher singled to left field, Brett Rhoades singled down the left field line and Beau Dreiling flew out, each scoring one run.
After Life Prep scored a run in the top of the third, Hays plated nine runs on six hits in the bottom of the third inning. Nash Kaiser singled twice and drove in three, Dreiling and Hardman had two-run singles, Dreher, Hardman both drove in a run with a single and Roe stole home. Life Prep scored three in the top of the fourth but the Indians answered with five in the bottom of the inning to end the game early. Dreiling drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly, Hardman had an RBI single, Kaiser a bases-loaded walk, Roe drove in a run on fielder's choice. Kal Lonsdale ended the game with an RBI single.
Cade Jennings earned the win, allowing five runs (one earned) on six hits over four innings with one strikeout and two walks.
The Indians had 17 hits and drew eight walks.
