Fort Hays State men's basketball looks for a regular season sweep of Newman University on Thursday night (Feb. 4) at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays. Tipoff is set for 7:30 pm, which follows the women's contest at 5:30 pm. The Tigers enter at 5-8 on the season, while the Jets are 2-11.
The Tigers are coming off a 79-68 win at home this past Saturday against Nebraska-Kearney. FHSU hit a season-high 13 3-point field goals in that contest, led by Jordan Pumphrey with seven. Pumphrey scored a season-high 25 points in that contest and he's averaging 22 points per game in the last two games.
FHSU took the first meeting with Newman this season in Wichita by a score of 81-75 in overtime. Kaleb Hammeke led the Tigers in that contest with 20 points, while Jared Vitztum had a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds. Vitztum is tied for the national lead in Division II for double-doubles with seven this season. He leads the team at 17.9 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. Gilbert Peters had 18 points off the bench and Quinten Rock chipped in 15.
Newman enters this contest on a seven-game losing streak. The Jets last win occurred on December 19 when they defeated Central Oklahoma in Wichita 90-68. Newman's only other win was by three points over Nebraska-Kearney. The Jets have not won a road game yet this season with a record of 0-5 away from Wichita.
FHSU holds a 40-10 advantage in the all-time series with Newman, which includes a 23-2 mark in Hays. FHSU has won the last three meetings between the teams.
Joel Boyce leads the Jets in scoring this season at 13.8 points per game. He led the Jets in the first meeting this season with the Tigers producing 18 points and nine rebounds.
