A winter weather advisory has been issued for Hays and the surrounding area beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday, according to the National Weather Service in Dodge City.
As north winds pick up through the day, rain is expected early Thursday afternoon. Wind gusts are expected to be as high as 44 mph. Between a tenth and a quarter-inch of rain is expected.
As the mercury drops in the evening, rain will turn to snow, the NWS predicted. Up to 4 inches of snow is possible in the Ellis County area.
The NWS warned that travel could be hazardous as roads will be slick and visibility will be reduced.
