On November 9, 2021, at midnight the Hays Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a structure fire located at 401 West 12th Street in Hays.

Occupants were sleeping at the time of the fire and were alerted by a working smoke detector.

Upon arrival fire crews found an upstairs apartment bathroom on fire and crews quickly deployed a 1 ¾” handline to attack the fire.

Crews were on scene for several hours checking for hot spots and clearing smoke out of the structure.

The last fire unit cleared at 3:14 a.m. Red Cross was called to assist the tenants with any needs necessary.

An investigation was conducted after the fire to try and determine the cause and origin of the fire and is ruled accidental.

The Hays Fire Department, Ellis County Fire Department Company 5, Ellis County EMS, Red Cross, and Hays Police Department all responded to the incident.

This incident is a great example that a working smoke detector saves lives.

The Hays Fire Department would like to remind everyone to check smoke and CO alarms to make sure they are functioning correctly.

Please contact the Hays Fire Department if you are interested in the smoke alarm program.
