One structure and about 6,000 acres of grass and brush in northeast Ellis County were burned in a fire yesterday afternoon, according to the state fire marshal, Mark Engholm, who was on the scene.

The blaze was near Codell Road and the Sweetwater Ranch with gusty winds pushed flames rapidly to the southeast.

Ellis County Kansas Fire & Emergency Management received mutual aid assistance from multiple counties and water drops from air tankers contracted through the Kansas Forest Service.
