PITTSBURG, Kan. - The Fort Hays State track and field teams opened the eighth annual Indoor Gorilla Classic with two broken school records, one event victory and seven national qualifying marks Friday (Feb. 10) in Pittsburg, Kan.
The men's distance medley relay team of Trever Medina, Hayden Albright, Ethan Lang and Grant Bradley combined to cover 4,000 meters in a school-record 9:45.59, more than four seconds faster than the previous top mark set last year. The Tigers finished fourth on the day and currently sit in eighth in Division II pending other results from this weekend.
Cross country All-American Regan Hodsden wrapped up the day by breaking her own school record in the 5,000m run, finishing third overall and second amongst DII competition with a time of 17:03.72. The time was more than three seconds faster than her previous high set in December on the same track.
Reba Mader captured the lone event victory of the day for the Tigers, crossing the line first in the 600y run in 1:25.13. The freshman leapt three spots to second on the FHSU DII era performance chart after shaving over 1.5 seconds off her previous season-best.
Albright had a busy day outside contributing to the DMR record, finishing first in the 60m dash qualifying with a personal-best time of 6.81 and placing third in the 200m dash with a PR of 21.65. Both times were national qualifying marks and allowed the sophomore to climb to fourth on the FHSU DII era list in the 60m dash and fifth on the 200m chart.
Philip Landrum crossed the line just behind Albright in the 200m, also beating out the national qualifying time with a mark of 21.68 to place fifth. Lyric Holman finished sixth in the women's 200m, running in a season-best NCAA DII qualifying time of 24.84.
Mattie Rossi finished 16th in the 200m dash with a personal-best time of 25.13, good for fourth on the FHSU DII era performance chart. Nolan Churchman now sits in seventh on the list in the men's 200m after running in 21.77, good for 14th. Churchman also matched his PR in the long jump with a national-qualifying leap of 23-4.
Chloe Stanley advanced through qualifying in both the 60m dash and the 60m hurdles, recording times of 7.86 in the sprint and 8.92 in the hurdles. She later recorded a time of 1:27.16 in the 600y run, ranking her eighth on the FHSU DII era performance chart.
Action will wrap up in Pittsburg with day two on Saturday (Feb. 11), with action on the track starting at 11 a.m. and field events opening at noon.
