Berniece Marguerite (Weigand) Landry, 98, was born July 18, 1923, the second daughter and sixth child of J.A. and Maude (Moore) Weigand in their farm home in Rush County, Kansas.
She grew up and attended school in La Crosse, Kansas, and graduated from La Crosse Rural High School in 1941. She attended Washburn University before moving to Wichita, Kansas, at the start of World War II. While in Wichita, she worked at Beech Aircraft Company. This is where she met and married Leo J. Landry. Berniece and Leo were married on March 30, 1942, and they enjoyed 58 years of life together until his death on September 23, 2001.
Berniece and Leo moved back to La Crosse in 1945. She worked at the Rush County Court House for several years. Their daughter, Carolyn Rose was born on January 15, 1953.
Bernie spent almost all of her life in La Crosse and was an active member of the community. As a member of the Evangelical United Brethren (later the Methodist Church) she taught Sunday School, was the Youth Fellowship leader, etc. for many years. She was one of the original volunteers of the Second Chance store and spent many years working there.
Bernie and Leo were avid antique lovers and refinished and enjoyed many beautiful things. She also loved animals and provided homes for many fortunate pets thru the years.
She had many friends and was a friend to many people of all ages, although she always preferred to stay in the background.
Bernie moved to Locust Grove Village, La Crosse, in 2016, and was a resident until she passed away on December 11, 2021.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo; their daughter, Carolyn Rose; her parents, J.A. and Maude Weigand; one sister, Edrie (Weigand) Foster (Dan); brothers, Carl Weigand, Victor Weigand (Margaret), Eldred Weigand (Rosalind), W.R. (Butch) Weigand (Mengabelle); and several nieces and nephews.
Bernie was always a favorite aunt of her nieces and nephews ...... Charles and Jan Sanford, Shadow Hills, California; Robert and Sue Sanford, Scottsdale, Arizona; Sybil (Foster) and Jerry Underwood, Leawood, Kansas; Krista Belle (Weigand) Bateman, Aurora, Colorado; Charles Dale and Elizabeth Foster, Castle Rock, Colorado; Sharon (Weigand) and Ben Grove, Frisco, Colorado; along with many friends and other relatives.
Church visitation will be Saturday, December 18, 2021, from 10:00 A.M. to 10:50 A.M. at the United Methodist Church, La Crosse, Kansas.
Funeral service will be Saturday, December 18, 2021, at 11:00 A.M. at the United Methodist Church, La Crosse, Kansas, with Pastor Scott Tempero officiating. Interment will be in the La Crosse City Cemetery, La Crosse, Kansas.
