🎾 Tigers win last match to edge Cougars

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Fort Hays State Tennis ran its overall win streak to six matches by edging University of Sioux Falls on Tuesday. The Tigers and Cougars played the match indoors at the Huether Family Match Pointe. The contest came down to the final singles match remaining, won by Grace Unruh of FHSU in thrilling fashion.

Fort Hays State picked up the first point in the match by winning two of three doubles contests. The Tigers clinched the first team point when the No. 2 team of Irina Alfonso and Suzana Faucz and the No. 3 team of Ines Latorre and Yone Pereiro each won 6-3. The No. 1 team of Janae Montoya and Shreethika Vangala lost 6-4.

FHSU moved out to a 3-1 lead by winning two of the first three singles matches that finished. Bethan Gill won her No. 5 match 6-4, 6-4, while Faucz took a three-set contest 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-4). Pereiro dropped her No. 4 match 6-2, 6-3.The Cougars evened up the team count by winning the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches. Vangala fell at No. 1 7-5, 6-3, while Alfonso fell at No. 2 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6). The team result came down to the No. 6 contest between Unruh and Katelyn Nesheim of Sioux Falls. Unruh fell in the first set 6-4, but rallied for a 6-1 win in the second to force a tiebreaker set. Unruh pulled away for a 10-5 win in the final frame to lift the Tigers to victory.

The Tigers continue their three-match road trip for the week at Winona State on Wednesday (Mar. 19) in Winona, Minn. The match is set for 1:30 p.m.
