🎥 TMP-M pays tribute to Ross during prayer, procession

Jeannine Marie Ross, 'Jean'

Jeannine Marie Ross (Jean) passed away August 24, 2022, at Hays Medical Center at the age of 86. She was born November 16, 1935, in Hays, Kansas, to Walter C. and Philomene Frances (Fisher) Ross.

Jean entered the convent when she was 15 years old and was with the Sisters of Saint Agnes for 23 years. During this time, she served as an educator and administrator at several private schools located in the states of Wisconsin and Indiana. After 23 years, she returned to Hays to care for her aging parents.

In Hays, she also continued to serve as an educator: teaching in Schoenchen, KS; Principal at Washington Elementary School, and for 18 years she served in the position of Assistant Superintendent of Finance with USD 489.

Jean earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Marian College in Fond De Lac, Wisconsin; her Master’s Degree in Education and her Master’s Degree in Speech were earned at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and her Doctor of Education (EdD) in Administration was earned from Fort Hays State University, Hays, KS.  

For 10 years, beginning in 2000, Jean served in the role as President of Thomas More Prep (TMP)-Marian.  The Jean Ross Society was created to honor spiritual and dedication to the success of Catholic schools in Hays, KS. She often referred to TMP as “God’s school.” Jean also received the Point of Light award, which is the highest recognition given to individuals who have given time, talent, and resources to the school.  

Jean is survived by sister, Marilyn Wasinger, Wichita, KS; sister-in-law, Debbie Ross, Hays, KS; brothers-in-law, Ken Pfeifer, Hays, KS, Dan Needy, Tucson, AZ, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Philomene (Fisher) Ross; sisters, Shirley Schartz, Patricia Needy, Betty Pfeifer, and brother Walter (Chuck) Ross, Jr.

Mass of Christian Burial was Thursday, September 1, 2022, at St Joseph Church, with Father Mike Scully officiating. Burial was at St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays, KS.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorials to TMP-Marian or for masses.

The family extends special thanks to all her caregivers at Via Christi Nursing Home, Hays Medical Center, and Hospice.

Services were entrusted to Brocks-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory, 2509 Vine, Hays, KS 67601.
