The recent record cold temperatures have forced a lot of Hays residents to turn up the heat in their households.
For Midwest Energy electric and gas customers, most of them will likely see their next bill increase, said Mike Morley, director of corporate communications.
"With this recent cold snap, there was an increase in gas prices," he said, "so your January bill might be $10 or $20 more than it normally would be. But it will pay itself out in one month. It's not going to be a long-term thing."
For those who have trouble paying their bills throughout the heating season, there is a federal program called LIEP that can help.
In Kansas, it's administered by the state Department of Children and Families.
Midwest Energy and DCF will host an informational program and LIEP sign-up event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Hays Public Library, 1205 Main. Lunch will be provided.
"If you've had trouble or have a large balance on your account, you can come down and apply for assistance. LIEP can help with a one-time grant," Morley said.
