Harold 'Chuck' Charles Kohfeld

Harold (Chuck) Charles Kohfeld beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away on May 1, 2021, in his home at Oro Valley, Arizona from natural causes at the age of 91. Chuck was born on February 5, 1930, in Norton, Kansas, to Harold Cornelius Kohfeld and Alice Kohfeld. He spent his childhood in Colby, KS and moved to Norton when he was 12 years old. He graduated from NCHS with the class of ‘48.
After high school, he attended the University of Kansas for 2 years before enlisting into the United States Navy during the Korean war. When the war ended he was able to return and finish his studies at KU.

In 1955, Chuck returned to his hometown of Norton, KS to work at the First National Bank, which later became First Security Bank, with his grandfather and father. The bank started in 1887. The Kohfeld family became involved in the bank around 1900 with the Smiley family and enjoyed a long, positive and productive relationship. Chuck continued to work at the bank with his family, including his son Karl Kohfeld, his son-in-law Joe Herman, his nephew Kurt Kohfeld and later his grandsons Aaron Herman and Charlie Kohfeld. Many of his kids and grandkids also worked there during their summer and winter breaks. Chuck stayed very active and involved with the bank until it sold in 2014.

Chuck was an avid tennis player, playing tennis almost daily until his mid-eighties. He enjoyed boating and gardening. He was very active in his children’s and grandchildren’s activities and loved getting to know his seven great-grandchildren.

He was proceeded in death by his brother Kenny Kohfeld (March 11, 1968) and Kenny’s widow Mary Ann Kohfeld (April 29, 2021).

He is survived by his wife Beverly Somers Kohfeld, his son Karl Somers Kohfeld (Shelly Smith), his daughters Claire Herman (Joe Herman) and Kris Kohfeld Stauder. His grandchildren Aaron Herman (Chelle Herman), Hanna Kohfeld (Jarrod Ward), Charlie Kohfeld (Jennifer Kohfeld), Jordan Herman (Katie Avery), Preston Herman, Marcus Herman, Maddy Stauder and Sam Stauder. His great-grandchildren Alexis and Wesley Kohfeld, Peyton, Wyatt, Thomas, and Henry Herman, and Esme Ward.

The Norton Public Library was very important to Chuck, as he was instrumental in getting it built. Memorial donations may be made to the Norton Library Foundation at, 1 Washington Square, Norton, KS 67654.
