The fifth-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team looks keep things rolling Sunday (Dec. 19) when the Tigers host Newman beginning at 2 p.m. inside Gross Memorial Coliseum.
Sunday will be Retro Night at the Coliseum, with fans encouraged to wear throwback Tiger gear! The first 250 fans in the door will receive a FREE retro t-shirt courtey of game sponsor Redeem Designs.
The Tigers enter the matchup 8-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play after getting back into the win column Friday against Central Oklahoma, while Newman (2-9, 0-5 MIAA) comes to the Coliseum on a five-game losing streak.
Fort Hays State has taken care of business in the all-time series against Newman, winning 20 of the 21 matchups dating back to 1984, including a perfect 12-0 record in Hays. FHSU is 11-1 against Newman during the Tony Hobson era, including seven wins at home.
The Tigers are the only team in the MIAA with four players ranked in the top 25 in the league in scoring. Katie Wagner is sixth in the conference with a team-high 17.1 points per game, while Olivia Hollenbeck ranks 18th with 11.4 points per night. Whitney Randall is close behind in 21st with an average of 11.2 points per contest while Lauren West is 24th with 10.7 points per matchup. Jaden Hobbs is also averaging in double figures with an average of 10.0 points per game.
Fort Hays State is grabbing 40.4 rebounds per game, tied for second-most in the MIAA. Wagner ranks third in the conference in total rebounding (10.2 per game) and second in defensive rebounds (8.0 per game).
Friday's win helped the Tigers keep an impressive streak alive. Fort Hays State has not lost consecutive games inside Gross Memorial Coliseum in more than 10 years (January 2011).
Newman is averaging 59.8 points per game, second-fewest in the MIAA. Tiffany Dortland leads the Jets with an average of 10.4 points per night. She has hit 20 shots from behind the arc, good for a .364 shooting percentage from 3-point range. Co-head coaches Drew Johnson and Nicole Ohlde-Johnson are in their first year in charge at Newman after coaching at Bethel, whom the Tigers will play on Monday (Dec. 20) to wrap up the semester.
