🏀 Monarchs take two from Great Bend

GREAT BEND – The TMP-Marian Monarchs girls held Great Bend to a season-low in points and the TMP boys used another solid fourth quarter on their way to a Valentine’s Day doubleheader sweep of Great Bend Tuesday.

GIRLS: TMP 45, Great Bend 29
The TMP Lady Monarchs held Great Bend to a season-low 29 points and outscored the Panthers 22-6 over the final 13 minutes on their way to a 45-29 victory.

Great Bend built an early 9-5 lead thanks to eight first quarter points from Sadie Spray.

In the second quarter, the Panthers (7-10) had their largest lead at 13-8 but TMP (12-7) answered with a 10-0 run to take a 19-13 lead.

Claire Schippers started the run, Hannah Garcia added a three-pointer and then Brooke Koenigsman scored the next six for TMP.

Great Bend briefly cut the Monarchs lead to two but Jaci VonLintel put TMP up 21-17 on a steal and layup with just under one minute to play in the first half.

Great Bend was able to tie the game at 23 with just over five minutes left in the third quarter.

With the game tied at 23 the Monarchs ended the third quarter on a 13-2 run for a 36-25 third quarter lead.

Teagan Gottschalk scored four points during the run for the Monarchs.

In the final frame TMP gave up back-to-back field goals to start the quarter but then held Great Bend scoreless over the final three minutes over the game while going on a 9-0 for a 45-29 victory.

Brooke Koenigsman led TMP with 18 points.

 BOYS: TMP 61, Great Bend 60
TMP’s Dylan Werth capped off another solid performance Tuesday night with a free throw with .8 second left lifting TMP to a 61-60 win, their 14th in-a-row.

The Monarchs (16-2) jumped out to an early 6-2 lead only to see Great Bend finished the first quarter with an 8-2 run for a 10-8 lead.

TMP was able to tie the game at 10 on a Werth field goal to start the second quarter but Great Bend answered right back with a 10-6 run.

Down the stretch there were two ties down the stretch before TMP took a 24-23 lead on a pair of Joey Mindrup free throws. But the lead was short-lived. The Panthers (9-8) outscored TMP 7-3 to end the first half for a 30-27 lead.

Great Bend maintained a lead throughout the majority of the third quarter before Griffin Schumacher tied the game at 45 with a free throw with just 26 seconds left. But a foul with no time left put Carter Coombs on the line with no time left and he made one-of-two putting Great Bend up 46-45 after three quarters.

The Panthers led by four to open the fourth quarter but TMP outscored Great Gend 14-9 over the final six minutes for a 61-60 victory.

The game was tied at 60 Dylan Werth was fouled with just .8 second left going for a rebound. With TMP in the bonus Werth made the first one for a 61-60 lead. Werth intentionally missed the second but missed the rim giving Great Bend a chance for one more play. But the Panthers inbound pass went off the glass and TMP came away with it for the one-point win.

Dylan Werth led all scorers for TMP with 23 points. Luke Rome added 11.

TMP will host Norton on Friday.
