Cold first half costs Hays girls in first round

Hays missed their last seven shots of the second quarter while Goodland made their last seven attempts pushing the Cowgirls to a 34-17 halftime advantage.

The Indians trailed 14-6 before Carly Lang banked in a three pointer to beat the first quarter buzzer and Ashlyn Flax opened the second quarter with a three pointer of her own to bring Hays within two points at 14-12. 

The rest of the quarter belonged to Goodland who went on a 20-5 run over the next seven and half minutes. Part of the big run came in the final three minutes after Hays trimmed their deficit down to six points. Goodland closed the second quarter on an 11-0 run.

Highlights

Goodland led by as many as 25 in the third quarter before Hays made some headway. Nine straight points by the Indians cut the lead down to 16 in the third quarter, but they would get no closer until the final two minutes of the game when Hays closed on an 8-0 run for the final margin of 54-41.

Hays was led by Carly Lang who tied a career high with 13. Ashlyn Flax set a career high with 10. Goodland was led by Talexa Weeter scoring 15 and Lindsey Cure added 12. The two sophomores average 30 points per game together.

Hays falls to 2-7 on the year while #8-3A Goodland improves to 8-1.

The Lady Indians will play Osborne in the consolation semifinals at Colby High School at 3:00.
