Michael McQuade, 74, died on January 7th, 2021 at the Comfort Care Home of Newton, KS. He was born July 15th, 1946 at Mt Carmel hospital, Pittsburg, KS, the son of Peter John and Mary Eileen (Lavery) McQuade.
Michael was a 1964 graduate of Ellinwood High School and a 1969 graduate of Pittsburg State University, Pittsburg, KS with a Bachelor’s degree in history.
Michael then joined the United States Navy in 1969, serving for 6 years, 1 month, 13 days and 12 ½ hours, as he would say, BUT WHO’S COUNTING? He served on the USS Barb (SSN-596) a nuclear submarine. After leaving the Navy in 1975, Michael went to work for Commonwealth Edison in the Chicago area in a nuclear power plant. After retiring at the age of 52, in 1998 as Vice President of Human Resources from Commonwealth Edison he returned to be a caregiver for his parents in Ellinwood, KS where he worked for a few years as a substitute teacher. He then served as Board President for USD 355 Ellinwood, which took him to National School Board conventions in several cities. He also served on the Ellinwood Community Library Foundation. Michael enjoyed traveling and spending time with family. Michael was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Ellinwood, and a member of the former Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5659.
Michael was predeceased by his parents, Peter John and Mary Eileen (Lavery) McQuade, a sister Mary Anne McQuade, a brother Kevin McQuade, and a sister-in-law Cathy McQuade, his grandparents, Peter Harrison and Mary Rose (Grannan) McQuade and Joseph Charles and Anne Virginia (Kelly) Lavery, as well as 1 nephew, 2 great nephews, and 1 great-great nephew.
Survivors include twin sister Patricia (Loy) Englehardt of Winslow AZ, and sisters Kathleen Mass of Omaha NE, Elaine Kallaus of Newton, KS, Maureen Schwartz of Kansas City and brothers Tim McQuade (Cindy) of Hoisington, Owen (Edith) McQuade of Russell, Dennis (Sue Beckham) of St. Charles MO and Mark (Ruthann) of Madill OK, as well as 21 nieces and nephews, 24 great nieces and nephews, a great, great niece and a host of other relatives and good friends.
An inurnment will be held at Lakin Comanche Cemetery in Ellinwood, on January 15, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. A Mass of Celebration will be held at a later date.
