Garden City scores late to hand Hays their first loss

Hays High honored their seniors before Friday night's game against Garden City. The Indians have 16 seniors listed on the roster.
Garden City used 15 play drives on their first and final drives of the game to score 13 of their 27 points in a six point win over Hays.

The first quarter featured just two possessions. Hays went 25 yards on 10 plays but punted. Garden City took over at their own three and went 15 plays, 97 yards, scoring on a six yard run for a 7-0 lead. The touchdown was the final play of the first quarter.

Hays responded seven plays later. Jaren Kanak went 15 yards on third down for the Indians first points. The drive took seven plays and covered 68 yards. A Jack Fields PAT tied the game at seven. The Indians then took their only lead of the game one drive later with a 67 yard pass from Kanak to Bryce Salmans for a 14-7 lead.

Hays forced a second consecutive three and out and took over with a touchdown lead. The Indians fumbled though two players later. Garden City took advantage of the short field with a running back pass for a 14-14 tie. 

The Indians looked to take the lead with less than a minute remaining but a rushing touchdown was called back on a holding penalty leaving the game tied at 14 at halftime.

Highlights

Neither team scored on their first two drives of the second half. Pinned deep, Garden City used a play action pass to score a 96 yard touchdown on the first play of the series for a 21-14 lead.

Hays tied the game one final time with a two yard Roy Maroni run to cap a five play, 47 yard drive with 8:18 remaining.

The Buffaloes then went on their second 15 play drive to score the game winning points. Garden City tried a field goal on fourth down for the two yard line. The kicked missed the uprights, but Hays was called for roughing the kicker and Garden City scored one play later. The Indians blocked the PAT for a 27-21 score.

Hays moved the ball to the 47 yard line with no timeouts but could not advance any further falling to 27-21.

Hays threw for 164 yards and ran for 168. Garden City ran for 155 yards and threw for 154.

Hays drops to 3-1 on the year and 2-1 in the WAC. Garden City improves to 3-1 and is 1-0 in conference play.

Hays is on the road in Abilene next Friday.
