HAYS – Cam Pehrson and Matt Cavanagh both had three hits while four pitchers held Boulder in check in the Hays Larks 4-1 win over the Collegians Friday night at Larks Park. Hays (11-4, 11-4 RMBL) has now won a season-best five straight games while Boulder (14-14, 12-13 RMBL) drops their ninth straight.
Starter Rustin Hays (1-0) pitched the first six innings and allowed one run on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks to pick up the win. Trey Riggs, Zach Firmature and Trevor Munsch all followed with one shutout inning of relief. Riggs struck out three and Munsch picked up his first save of the season.
The Larks grabbed the early on a first inning sacrifice fly from Wyatt Divis which scored Leo Jiminian. After the Colleigans tied it with a run in the top of the third, Divis gave the Larks the lead for good with a line drive to right which scored Jiminian to put Hays up 2-1.
Pehrson extended the lead to 3-1 in the sixth with a two-out line drive home to left. The Coshise (Texas) College product has now hit four home runs in the last four games.
Matt Cavanagh’s double to right scored Pehrson in the eighth to close out the scoring.
The Larks open a two-game weekend series with the Colorado Sox Saturday at 7 p.m. then close out the set Sunday at 7 p.m.
