TOPEKA, Kan. - The Fort Hays State track and field teams earned two All-MIAA honors, recorded five national-qualifying marks and sent six athletes through the prelim round and into the finals on day two of the MIAA Indoor Championships Saturday.
The heptathlon finished up this afternoon, with Ethan Salmans displaying remarkable versatility and endurance, finishing fifth overall with a total score of 4880 points. Salmans showcased his skills across a range of events, from the 60m sprint to the 1,000m run, demonstrating his all-around ability as a multi-event athlete. Notably, his earned him a provisional mark, indicating his potential to qualify for the NCAA Division II national championships in the heptathlon.
The preliminaries kicked off with a burst of speed as the Tigers raced towards their goals. Notably, Taylor Savolt and Maggie Remsberg secured spots in the women's 60m hurdles finals, with Savolt's time of 8.80 earning her fifth place and Remsberg's 9.29 seconds placed her at tenth with Savolt making the finals set for tomorrow (Feb. 25). Meanwhile, in the men's 60m dash, Eddie McVay and Toby Wahlmeier showcased their speed, narrowly missing the finals but leaving their mark with strong performances.
As the day progressed, the Tigers continued to shine in the sprints and middle-distance events. Hayden Albright blazed through the men's 200m preliminaries, securing sixth place with a time of 21.45, while Toby Wahlmeier followed closely behind in 14th place. Albright's impressive performance earned him a spot in the finals. In the women's 400m preliminaries, Reba Mader and Kindley Brown finished 14th and 15th.
The middle-distance events saw the Tigers continue their dominance, with Ethan Lang and Kaden Wren advancing to the finals in the men's 600y. Ethan Lang's 600y time is just a second from his personal best but was exceptional enough to come in first and have a chance to win the finals tomorrow with Wren. Trevor Medina secured second place in the men's 800m preliminaries, clocking in at 1:53.59. Medina earned a spot in the finals while Aaron Mangan and Isaac Radke narrowly missed the cutoff, coming in ninth and 12th.
In the 5,000m races, Jaycee Vath and Regan Hodsden delivered a stunning one-two finish, with both athletes achieving NCAA Division II national qualifying marks and All-MIAA honors. Jaret Pfiizenmaier showcased his endurance on the men's side, claiming fourth place, almost securing an All-MIAA mark.
In the field events, Taylor Savolt impressed once again, securing fourth place in the women's long jump finals with a leap of 18-7.00 feet. Her performance marked an NCAA Division II national qualifying mark and was less than a foot from her personal best. Dayton Williams demonstrated his prowess in the men's high jump, securing tenth place with an impressive clearance of 6-8.75 feet. His performance marked a provisional mark, indicating his potential to qualify for the NCAA Division II national championships and highlighting his contribution to the Tigers' success.
Fort Hays State University showcased their strength and teamwork in the distance medley relays (DMR), with both the men's and women's teams delivering impressive performances. In the men's DMR, the quartet of Trevor Medina, Kaden Wren, Ethan Lang and Grant Bradley combined their talents to secure a commendable fourth place finish. Their synchronized effort and determination were evident as they navigated through the grueling 1,200m, 400m, 800m, and 1,600m legs of the relay. This time was good enough for a trip to the nationals. The women's DMR team comprising Faith Little, Kinley Brown, Hattie Lukert and Madison Sutterfield showcased their resilience and teamwork as they raced to a third-place finish with a time of 12:09.23.
The Tiger women are second with 37 points through six completed events while the men sit in seventh with 14 points through six events as well.The MIAA Championships will wrap up on Sunday (Feb. 25) beginning at noon, with track events starting at 1:30 p.m.
