HAYS, Kan. - Fort Hays State fell 2-0 to Missouri Southern on Sunday at FHSU Soccer Stadium. The Lions scored a goal in each half, improving to 2-4-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the MIAA. The Tigers moved to 2-6-1 overall and 0-4 in the MIAA.
Fort Hays State recorded seven shots in the first half, but were held without a shot in the second half. The Lions nearly replicated their eight shots from the first half with seven in the second half and finished with 15 for the game.
Missouri Southern picked up its first goal in the 21st minute by Sophie Spoonmore, assisted by Lizeth Almaraz. The Tigers nearly countered with some quality looks, including two shots that hit posts in the first half. MSSU goalkeeper Bella Smith recorded three saves to keep the Tigers scoreless.
Spoonmore scored again for the Lions at 63:32 on a nice through pass from Nevie White. Missouri Southern claimed its first win over FHSU since 2012.
Katie Stoskopf made three saves in the second half, subbing in for Makayla Charles who got her first start in goal for FHSU. Charles did not record any saves in the first half.
Fort Hays St. returns to action Friday (Oct. 2), traveling to Topeka, Kan. to face Washburn at 6 p.m. They will be back home to host Newman on Sunday (Oct. 4) at 1 pm.
