Ellis County unemployment remained steady and very low at 1.3 percent in December, which was the same as in November.

The jobless rate remains low in the rest of northwest Kansas with most counties at or below a 2 percent unemployment rate. Trego County had a 2 percent unemployment rate in December, which was a half percent decline from the previous month.

Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services division of the Kansas Department of Labor and the Bureau of Labor Statistics show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 2.8 percent for the state in December. This is a decrease from 2.9 percent in November and a decrease from 2.9 percent in December 2022.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment decreased by 300 from November. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs decreased by 700 over the month, while government increased by 400.

Since December 2022 Kansas' seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 11,400. This change is due to an increase of 3,200 private sector jobs and an increase of 8,200 government jobs.
