🥎 Tigers defeat Swedes by run-rule twice

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State improved to 8-7 overall on the season with a pair of 8-0 run-rule wins over Bethany College on Wednesday (Mar. 4). The Tigers won both games in six innings. The Swedes moved to 4-9 overall for the season.

Game 1: Fort Hays State 8, Bethany 0 (6 inn.)
Fort Hays State scored two in the first, one in the second, three in the fourth, and then walked off the first game with a pair of runs in the sixth to produce the run rule in game one. An Audrey Gillespie 2-RBI double opened the scoring in the first and Kaydawn Haag scored a run in the third on a wild pitch. A Lilly Mohr solo home run and RBI singles by Peyton Shepard and Gillespie in the fourth made it 6-0. Kory Schoenfeld scored on a throwing error in the sixth and then Lilliana Ramirez-Johnson drew a bases loaded walk to end the game.

Gillespie finished with three RBIs on two hits. Shepard had a three-hit game and scored twice. Hannah Green notched two hits as well. Haag crossed the plate twice.

Solana Carpenter threw the first 5.0 innings and allowed just three hits with four strikeouts. Abbey Duarte pitched one inning and allowed just one hit. Dylann Baker took the loss for Bethany, allowing three runs over 3.0 innings of work. Three other Swedes pitched in relief and combined for the other five runs allowed.

Game 2 Fort Hays State 8, Bethany 0 (6 inn.)
The Tigers jumped on top early again in game two, scoring three in the first and one in the second. The added two-run innings in the fourth and sixth to produce another run-rule win by the same score in the same amount of innings. Peyton Shepard had an RBI single in the first, while Abbey Duarte notched an RBI on a groundout and Lilly Mohr drove in a run with a double. Shepard had another pair of RBI singles in the second and fourth innings. Errors helped the Tigers score their final three runs, both off the bat of Audrey Gillespie. Gillespie did pick up one RBI in the sixth on the game-ending play.

Shepard went 3-for-3, all on singles that produced runs. Hannah Green crossed the plate four times in the game and notched two hits. Lilly Mohr had a pair of hits in the game.

Korryn Johnson picked up the win by throwing the first 3.0 innings. She allowed just two hits and struck out two. Myah Wolfe picked up a three-inning save, her first of the season, allowing just one hit. Mackenzie Yoder took the loss for Bethany, allowing four runs (one earned) over 2.0 innings. Three other Swedes pitched and combined for the final four runs.

Fort Hays State will be at home again for another non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday (Mar. 10). The Tigers will host Southwestern Oklahoma State for a 1 p.m. start.
