Gale Ray 'The Captain' Wood

Gale Ray “The Captain” Wood, 72, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, November 4, 2020, at the Russell Regional Hospital.

Gale was born February 11, 1948, in Grant County, Kansas. He was the son of Andrew and Jessie (Neill) Wood. He grew up on a farm in Grant County and graduated from Satanata High School. He then attended Ft. Hays State University.

Gale was united in marriage to Carol Jean Johnson on June 3, 1967, in Salina, Kansas. This union was blessed with two children; Kelly and Cindy. They made their home in Salina for a short time before moving to Ulysses, Kansas. After 18 years, they moved to Lakin, Kansas and then in 2000 they moved to Russell.

Gale was the owner and operator of the Irrigation Repair Service in Ulysses, before that he worked in repairs for the John Deere Implement Company. Later in life he was a truck driver for Deitz Construction for 20 years. He enjoyed fishing, watching Nascar Racing, collecting guns and coins and driving his truck.

Gale’s surviving family include his wife of 53 years, Carol of Russell, Kansas; daughter, Cindy Jury (Rod) of Russell, Kansas; brother, Ben Wood of Ulysses, Kansas; granddaughter, Sadie Wood of Hays, Kansas; and two great grandchildren, Ronan Elliott and Hayden Ruiz.

Gale was preceded in death by his parents and son Kelly Ray Wood.

A Memorial Service will be held at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary. No visitation will be held, cremation has taken place. A private burial of ashes will follow at a later date.
