Duane William Buchholz, 96, of WaKeeney, Kansas, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 6, 2026, at the Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital. Born on May 13, 1930, in WaKeeney to Fred and Julia (Hervey) Buchholz, Duane spent his life in the community he cherished.
Duane raised two children in WaKeeney with his wife, Elizabeth "Betty," the love of his life.
He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, remembered for his wit, generosity, and kindness — always ready to lend a helping hand. His greatest joy was spending time with his family. He dedicated 43 years of service to the Rural Electric Corporation, now Western Cooperative Electric, where he built a long and respected career. Duane also served in the National Guard.
Curious and analytical by nature, Duane loved understanding how things worked. He found joy in repairing cars and fixing anything that was broken, often welcoming the challenge when someone brought him something that needed attention. After retiring, he could most often be found gardening or working in his garage. He also had a deep interest in science and both local and world history and enjoyed traveling with his wife often visiting quilt shops along the way.
Duane is survived by his son, Eugene Buchholz and wife Michelle of Oakley, California; his daughter, Gail Jensen and husband Richard of WaKeeney; two grandchildren, Tara Harold and husband Thomas of Moorpark, California, and Kimberly Pinto and husband David of Suisun City, California; two great-grandchildren, Caylee and Dominic Harold; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; sisters Irene Wheeler and Gladys Jamison; and brothers Harry, Roy, LaVerne, and Glenn.
A private Family Graveside Service will be held with inurnment at the WaKeeney City Cemetery.
