HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs baseball team suffered its first loss of the season Friday against Manhattan but bounced with a win over Life Prep to 1-1 on the first day of the Diamond Classic at Hays High School.
GAME 1: Manhattan 6, TMP 2
After an earlier TMP lead, Manhattan shut down the Monarchs'
bats for six straight innings while rallying with five in the fifth inning for
a 6-2 win over TMP.
The Monarchs took advantage of three straight walks to open the top of the first inning, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Logan Baalmann and an error by the third baseman, for a 2-0 TMP lead.
TMP pitcher Grant Nehls (2-1) got his first start of the season and was solid through four innings, but in the bottom of the fifth inning, he gave up a three-run home run and a double for a 5-2 Manhattan lead.
The Indians added a sixth run in the inning as the Indians secured the 6-2 victory.
Nehls allowed six runs on five hits and five walks over four innings.
Carson Liles, Caden Dinkel and Nehls collected one hit each. Baalmann drove in the Monarchs only run.
GAME 2: TMP 7, Life Prep 3
Trailing 1-0, after a homerun in the top of the first, TMP’s
Carson Liles connected on his first homerun of the season, tying the game at
one.
Later in the first inning, Logan Baalmann singled home a second run, giving TMP a 2-1 lead.
TMP starter, Carson Liles (6-0), scattered three runs on four hits over seven innings with three walks and six strikeouts to pick up the win.
Offensively, the Monarchs' bats were held in check until the bottom of the fourth inning, when they scored five runs.
Caden Dinkel led off the inning with his fourth home run of the season.
Two hitters later, Connor Breit drove in a run with an infield single for a 4-0 lead.
Ian Nehls’ ground rule double drove in a pair of runs and then Ty Schmeidler added a run with an RBI single as the Monarchs went on to secure the 7-3 victory.
Every Monarch in the lineup, but three collected at least one hit led by Ty Schmedler and Logan Baalman who were 2-for-3.
Seven of the nine Monarchs scored a run and six of the nine drove in a run. Ian Nehls had a team-high two RBI’s.
TMP will take on Hays High at approximately 12:15 Saturday.
Kansas High School Activities Association Regional seedings will also be released on Saturday.
