
Maxine Ann (Berls) Shipley passed away at the age of 88 on Friday, July
2, 2021, at the Sheridan County LTC, Hoxie, Kansas. She was born
December 22nd, 1932, in Leoville, Kansas to Joseph and Laura (Schroer)
Berls. Maxine graduated from Leoville High School in 1951, and attended
Nurses Training at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, Kansas. She worked
at both the Colby and Hoxie Hospitals. While working in Hoxie, Maxine
met Ross Shipley, and they were married on February 25, 1954. Ross and
Maxine lived on a farm 22 miles northeast of Hoxie for forty-three
years. To this union, five children were born. Maxine was a dedicated
mother and farm wife. She was a great cook and helped with the farm
chores when needed. She also drove the school bus for several years.
In 1997, Maxine and Ross moved to Hoxie.
Maxine enjoyed traveling with her friends and family, bowling, and
playing golf. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren,
and great-grandchildren. They were her pride and joy. She was a
member of St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church and St. Frances Cabrini
Sodality.
Maxine was proceeded in death by her parents, Joseph and Laura
Berls; husband, Ross in 1998; sister, Mary Rose Griffin; brother, Larry
Berls; brothers-in-law Rick Moses, Gerald Shipley, Howard Shafer, Bill
Minium, Dale Woofter; sisters-in-law, Freda Shafer and Margie Minium.
She is survived by her children, Cindy Zahner of Roeland Park,
Kansas, Joella Bergman (Bob) of Minneapolis, Kansas, Lila William (Vic)
of Overland Park, Kansas, Rick Shipley (Jeanne) of Hoxie, Kansas and
Steve Shipley (Vanessa) of Centennial, Colorado; 15 grandchildren and 15
great-grandchildren; brother, Jim Berls (Jan); sisters, Joyce Chaffin
(Howard) and Linda Moses; brother-in-law, Bob Griffin; and
sisters-in-law, Della Jean Shipley, Gladys Woofter and Shelia Berls; and
many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial is planned for Tuesday, July 6, 2021,
10:30 AM at the St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church in Hoxie, Kansas.
Burial will follow the service in St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home, Hoxie,
Kansas on Monday, July 5, 2021 from 1:30 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. The
family will receive friends at the Funeral Home from 4:00 P.M. until
6:00 P.M. A Rosary and Vigil Service will follow the visitation at 6:00
P.M. The family suggests memorials to the Leoville Cemetery or the St.
Frances Cabrini Cemetery in Hoxie. Memorials may be sent in care of
