MANHATTAN – The Hays High softball team closed out their regular season with a pair of losses Thursday. The Indians allowed only three earned runs but lost to Manhattan 4-0 and 8-5 to Salina South. HHS has dropped four-straight games and closed the regular season with a 15-11 overall record. They will find out Saturday who and when they play in next week’s 5A regional.
Manhattan 4, Hays 0 The host Indians took advantage of a two-out error to score the first run of the game in the third. They used a leadoff triple and single to push the lead to 2-0 in the fifth. They added two more runs following an error in the sixth.
Hays was limited to five singles and had only one player reach second base.
Aubree Thomas allowed only one earned run on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks and took the loss.
Salina South 8, Hays 5 Hays jumped out to an early 3-0 lead but the Cougars answered with a seven-run third.
Alyse Zimmerman’s two-out double scored Riley Dreher and A Solida to give the Indians a 2-0 lead in the first. Dreher’s two-out single scored Dezarae Schmidt to push the lead to 3-0 in the second.
The Cougars used a single, a walk and error to score their first run in the bottom of the inning. They scored the next six runs with two outs with a walk, single and error.
HHS would get a run back on Lauren Klien’s single which scored Zimmerman.
Dani Willeford drove in a run in the fifth with the sixth but the Cougars would score again in the bottom of the inning.
Riley Dreher allowed eight runs (two earned) on seven hits with four walks and two strikeouts and took the loss in the circle.
