🏀 Hays boys win WAC Crown; girls fall to Dodge City

Hays High finished off four straight road games with a trip to Dodge City on Tuesday night.

Girls

#4 Dodge City 42 – Hays 24

Dodge City used an 8-0 first quarter run to break a three all tie with Hays. Re Green tied the game on a right wing three before the Red Demons went on their run which grabbed an 11-3 lead. The Indians went scoreless for just over six minutes before Morgan Engle hit a free throw in the final seconds of the first quarter and an 11-4 deficit.

Dodge City pushed their advantage to nine at 13-4 on the first possession of the second quarter but scored just two more points the remainder of the quarter. Hays made two more three pointers and used them for a 8-2 run that pulled the halftime score to 15-12 in favor of Dodge City.

Highlights

Hays had three possessions to end the first half the three to begin the second half down by three points but did not score on any of the six chances. Dodge City then went on a 9-0 run to take command at 24-12.

The Indians trailed by double figures for most of the final ten minutes of the game falling 42-24. Down fourteen Hays cut the deficit down to ten with three minutes remaining but would not score any more.

With the win, Dodge City takes the Western Athletic Conference crown. Their 7-0 mark in league play with one game remaining makes it so that nobody can catch them. The Red Demons are 17-1 on the year. Hays falls to 6-13 on the season and 1-6 in WAC play. Hays will be the four seed in next week’s sub-state tournament.

Boys

#1 Hays 61 – Dodge City 49

A 10-2 and 9-0 run in the first half by Hays High was offset by a Dodge City 13-1 run in the second quarter resulting in a tight three point game at halftime. The Indians first run of 10-2 came when score was tied up at four a piece.

The Red Demons run came in the second quarter that resulted in a 19-15 lead for Dodge City. The Indians scored just one point over a four minute span in the second quarter before going on their own 9-0 run to take the lead back. A Jace Linenberger basket hit a bucket with three seconds left in the first half for a 28-25 lead at halftime.

Highlights

Dodge City tied the game at 28 to open the second half. The Indians erupted on a 13-2 run to take a 41-30 advantage and led 48-37 going to the fourth quarter. Hays pushed their lead to a game high 15 at 52-38 when Dodge City made one last run. An 11-3 run by the Red Demons brought the Hays lead down to 55-49 with a little over two minutes remaining. Hays made six of their final nine free throws to win 61-49.

Jace Linenberger and Dalyn Schwarz each unofficially recorded double-doubles. Linenberger led all scoring with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Schwarz scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Carson Kieffer added 14 points for the Western Athletic Conference champion Hays High Indians.

The Indians improve to 19-0 on the year and are 7-0 in league play. Dodge City falls to 10-8 and 4-3. Hays will host Great Bend Friday to finish conference play, the regular season and host senior night.
