
Clarence E. Young, 81, died Monday, May 31, 2021, in Lane County, Kansas.
He was born July 28, 1939, in Syracuse, Kansas the son of Otis and
Helen (Uhler) Young.
A lifetime resident of Lakin, Clarence attended Lakin schools and
graduated from Lakin High School in 1958. He later served in the United
States Army from 1960 to 1963. After the service, Clarence returned to
Lakin where he began working as a farmer. He then worked for the City
of Lakin, Panhandle Eastern Natural Gas Co., and the Kansas Department
of Transportation before his retirement in 2002. On July 3, 1965, he
married Bessie Briggs in Lakin, Kansas. Clarence later married Shirley
A. (Eveleigh) Gilbert on July 25, 1973 in Lakin, Kansas. He was a
member of the VFW and the American Legion. Clarence enjoyed camping,
traveling, fishing, and loved to spend time with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife Shirley Young of the home; four children
Gary L. & wife Chris Gilbert of Lakin, Jimmy D. Gilbert of Garden
City, Kansas, Bobbie & husband Kirk Newport of Lakin, and Carrie
& husband Jeff Gnagy of Wichita, Kansas; a brother Curtis Young of
Lakin; twelve Grandchildren; and three Great-Grandchildren. Clarence is
preceded in death by his parents and a sister LaVelda Young.
A graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, June 4,
2021, at the Lakin Cemetery in Lakin, Kansas with Rev. Rita Stockton
officiating, and military honors conducted by the Kansas Army National
Guard Honor Guard. Friends may call from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on
Thursday and from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Friday all at Garnand
Funeral Home in Lakin, Kansas.
The family suggests memorials given to the Kearny County Senior Center in care of the funeral home.
