Hays Fire Department reports three structure fires over holiday weekend

The Hays Fire Department responded to several building fires over the Thanksgiving weekend.

On Nov. 26, approximately 10:48 p.m., the Hays Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a fire at a residential apartment located at 215 W. Sixth Street in Hays.

Firefighters found fire in the basement apartment and quickly extinguished it.

All occupants made it out safely.

Investigation determined that an overloaded electrical extension cord was at fault causing the fire.

On Nov. 27, approximately 11:44 p.m., the Hays Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a burning smell at a residential apartment located at 411 E. 13th.

Firefighters found an electrical outlet that had arced inside the wall due to a poor connection at the outlet.

Occupants of the apartment recognized the odor and call 911 immediately.

The electrical circuit was isolated, and no further damage was caused.

On Nov. 28. approximately 2:40 p.m., the Hays Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire of a residence located at 308 W. 39th.

Firefighters found that a fire started outside of the home in the back yard.

The fire progressed to the rear of the house and deck.

Fire was found in the attic space and ground level room of the home. The residents were not home at the time of the fire, but firefighters did successfully rescue three dogs from the fire.

The cause of the fire is deemed undetermined at this time.

The Hays Fire Department, Ellis County Fire Department Company 5, City of Ellis Fire Department, City of Victoria Fire Department, Ellis County EMS, and Hays Police Department all responded.
