Wanda Mae McFarland

Wanda Mae McFarland, 95, died July 11, 2021. She was born on April 4, 1926, on the family farm near Milan, KS. She was the 5 th of seven children born to Oran & Edna Sellers. Wanda attended Milan high school where she met Ervin. They were married on Feb. 8, 1943.

Wanda was a war time bride and spent four months worrying while Ervin was a POW in Germany. Wanda and Ervin lived in several Kansas communities and ended up in Valley Center. They raised four children: Merlin, Terry, Larry & Lisa. Wanda retired after 17 years from Stearman Aircraft in Valley Center. Wanda  sold AVON for 36 years until she retired at age 94. She was in the Avon President’s Club for 36 years for sales of more than $10,000 in a year.


Wanda and Ervin began attending the Milan Church of Christ early in their marriage. Church became an important part of their lives finding church homes when they lived in Hays, KS and then at Northside Church of Christ when they moved to Valley Center. Ervin and Wanda were among the Founders of the Valley Center of Christ about 1975. After that church closed, she returned to Northside Church of Christ where she remained a member until her death. 

Wanda was preceded in death by her husband, Ervin; her parents Oran & Edna Sellers: siblings, Lorraine Hogue, Meryl Sellers, Marvin Sellers, Maxine Ellison, Oran Sellers Jr, & Evelyn Carr. She is also preceded by 3 nieces, 3 nephews, and 1 grandson, Mitch Carrithers.

Wanda is survived by her children: Merlin (Nita) McFarland of Kingman KS, Terry (Donna) McFarland of Westerville, Ohio, Larry (Brenda) McFarland of Kansas City, MO. & Lisa (Mike) Vermillion of Wichita; 14 grandchildren & 36 great grandchildren. Visitation with family will be held from 6-8 pm, Friday, July 16, and  Funeral Service, 1:00 pm, July 17, at Northside Church of Christ, 4545 N. Meridian. Graveside at 3:30 pm, Argonia Cemetery, Argonia, KS.
