TOPEKA - The Kansas Department of Transportation was awarded a $6.7 million Advanced Transportation and Congestion Management Technologies Deployment grant from the Federal Highway Administration for the Great Plains Rural Freight Technology Corridor project.
This project will improve safety and economic productivity on a 100-mile stretch of U.S. 83, from southern Finney County line to the north Thomas County line, which is a key freight transport route in Kansas. The project will install 100 miles of fiber-optic cable and advanced technologies to deliver traffic, weather and other operational information to commercial trucking to optimize freight routing.
“This project will greatly assist in the efficient movement of agriculture products and other freight along the U.S. 83 corridor,” said Mike Floberg, KDOT’s Director of Innovative Technology. “Expanding different transportation opportunities across rural areas of Kansas will improve connectivity and will help our state’s transportation system be more connected.”
A total of 10 organizations were selected to receive grants totaling $45.2 million on projects designed to improve mobility and safety, reduce congestion and support underserved communities.
The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will allow the ATCMTD funding to continue from 2022 through 2026 at the same level and with a greater focus on rural transportation, transit, paratransit and protecting the environment.
