HAYS, Kan. — Fort Hays State defeated William Jewell 2-0 on Wednesday evening at FHSU Soccer Stadium. It was the first shutout of the season for the No. 14 ranked Tigers. FHSU finished with a 17-4 shot advantage, put eight attempts on goal, and did not allow a shot on goal, moving to 2-1 overall for the season. William Jewell moved to 0-2 overall for the season.
In the first half, Fort Hays State outshot William Jewell 7-2 and had a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. Kyle Clayton scored at 36:18, a rebound off his first attempt on goal that was saved by the keeper at close range. That sent Fort Hays State into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
Fort Hays State held a 10-2 advantage in shots in the second half. Davide Francesca's goal on a shot near the top of the box in the 82nd minute made it 2-0. Payton Roehrich did not have to record any saves for his first individual shutout of the season in goal.
The Tigers go on the road this weekend for a neutral site match with Fort Lewis in Alamosa, Colo. The Skyhawks are receiving votes in the latest national poll and started the season 2-0 overall.
FHSU Highlight Performances
-Kyle Clayton had one goal and tied Julius Petersson with a team-high three shots.
-Davide Francesca scored on his only shot attempt of the game.
-Payton Roehrich recorded an individual shutout and saw his season goals against average drop to 0.34.
