PARK CITY – Hays High’s Harley Zimmerman claimed his second straight state title, capping off an undefeated senior season at 42-0, with a 5A state wrestling championship Saturday.
The Hays High girls were led by Lexi Burton who earned here third state medal with a runner-up finish at Hartman Arena in Park City.
Zimmerman, in his fourth state tournament appearance, claimed the state championship at 144 pounds. He won the state title at 132 pounds as a junior. He was second at 132 pounds as a sophomore and fourth as a freshman at 126 pounds.
The Hays High senior opened the state tournament with back-to-back falls over Chase Wilson of Spring Hill (1st period) and Ramiz Monaco of Kapaun Mt. Carmel (3rd period).
In the semifinals, Zimmerman earned a 4-1 victory over Emerson Tjaden of De Soto and then in the finals, Zimmerman got a 5-3 sudden victory win over Kaden Allen of St. Thomas Aquinas claiming back-to-back state championships.
Zimmerman finished the season with a record of 42-0 and in his four seasons at Hays High he recorded a career record of 146-15.
Hay High’s McCullough earned a fourth-place finish at 113 pounds and Jonathan Rigler placed sixth at 175 pounds.
McCullough bounced back from a loss in the quarterfinals on Thursday to get to the third-place match, going 3-1 on the backside of the bracket, losing in the third-place match to Kolby Quint of Arkansas City in tie breaker number one, 5-4.
McCullough finishes the year 35-10 and is a two-time state placer. He finished sixth at 113 pounds as a junior.
After upsetting the number one ranked wrestler in the quarterfinals Thursday at 175 pounds Jonathan Rigler earns a fifth-place finish.
Following the 2-0 start, he lost back-to-back matches before dropping the fifth-place match, 17-2 to Zachary Wessley of Goddard in a rematch of the quarterfinal match won by Rigler.
Rigler finished his sophomore season with a record of 31-17.
The Indian boys finished 11th as a team with 63 points.
The Hays High girls had two medal winners and tied for 10th as a team at the 5-6A state tournament in Park City.
Lexi Burton finishes her career as a three-time state placer for the Indians earning a runner-up finish at 140 pounds as a senior.
Burton, who had previously finished fifth (135 pounds) and sixth (at 143 pounds) at state, got all the way to the state championship match but lost a 5-1 decision to Jayla Johnson of Kapaun Mt. Carmel.
Burton finished the season 32-2.
Tionna Napue became a two-time state placer this weekend with a third-place finish at 120 pounds.
The junior Napue went 4-0 on the backside of the bracket after losing in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
She closed out the third place finished with a 5-3 win over Taylie Heston from Topeka-Seaman. Napue finished 35-4 on the season.
