HAYS – Great Bend jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, defeating Hays High 18-6 in five innings Tuesday at Hays High School.
The Panthers scored six runs in the first two innings to take control and finished with 18 hits, including three home runs. Great Bend also capitalized on seven Hays errors, with 10 of its 18 runs scoring unearned.
Great Bend plated two runs in the first inning and added four more in the second to go up 6-1. The Panthers tacked on one run in the third, five in the fourth and six in the fifth to end the game by run rule.
Hays got on the board in the second inning when Brynlee Brous doubled to left and later scored. The Indians made things interesting in the third, scoring four runs. Brooklynn Dinkel drove in two with a double, later scored on a bases-loaded walk, and Brynlee Rupp crossed the plate on a passed ball. Dinkel added an RBI single in the fourth to cap the Indians’ scoring.
Jaylee Summers took the loss for Hays, working 4 1/3 innings and allowing 15 runs, eight earned, on 15 hits. She walked two and struck out none.
Dinkel paced the Hays offense with two of the team’s six hits, driving in three runs and scoring twice.
Hays has dropped six of its last seven games and falls to 7-8 overall and 4-3 in the WAC. The Indians travel to Great Bend on Thursday for a 4 p.m. doubleheader.
