πŸ€ TMP boys win MCL tournament title; girls finish 5th

The TMP-Marian Monarchs boys had to rally from down double digits in the fourth quarter as they claimed their second straight Mid-Continent League title Monday with 51-49 win over Hill City.

The TMP girls rallied from down 14 for a 38-36 win over Trego in the fifth place finish in the MCL tournament.

After a quick start the TMP-Marian Monarchs found themselves down 10 in the fourth quarter but for a second time in the tournament Kade Harris hit the game winner and lifted TMP (8-2) to the 51-49 victory over Hill City, their second straight MCL tournament title and fifth since joining the league.

Hill City opened the game with a Trent Long jumper for a 2-0 lead but the Monarchs answered with seven straight and a 15-5 run, capped off by a Griffin Schumacher for a 15-7 lead.

Trimmer the lead to four to end the first quarter.

TMP went back up eight to start the second quarter on Evan Balthazor field goal for a 19β€”11 lead.

Hill City (8-2) strung together an 8-0 run of their own drawing even at 19-19 late in the second quarter.

Joey Mindrup scored the final five points of the first half, giving TMP a 24-19 lead on a three-pointer at the end of the first half.

Dylan Werth, after dealing with foul trouble in the first half, scored the first six points of the second half and a Schumacher free throw put TMP up 31-23.

On the ensuing Hill City possession Werth was called for a foul and then a technical foul. Long made all four free throws and then two more on the possession after the another TMP foul cutting the TMP lead to 31-29.

The six straight free throws sparked a 19-2 run to end the third quarter for a 42-33 Hill City lead.

They extended their lead to 10 points, at 46-36, but the Monarchs outscored Hill City 15-7 down the stretch.

In the final minutes TMP’s Harris and Schumacher and Landon Rozean field goal tied the game at 49-49with less than a minute to play.

With 4.4 seconds to play, and the game tied TMP’s Harris raced to the other end, shot a running three pointer off the glass and pulled in the offensive put-back as time expired for a 51-49 TMP victory.

Kade Harris and Dylan Werth each scored 12 points to lead the Monarchs while Griffin Schumacher and Joey Mindrup added seven each.

Hill City’s Trent Long scored a game-high 20 points.

The TMP Lady Monarchs had to shake off a rough start and rally from down double-digits for a 38-36 win over Trego in the girls 7th place game.

Both teams struggled out of the gate with the game tied at five after the first quarter.

TMP (6-5) briefly took an 8-7 lead but Trego (7-6) answered with a 15-0 run to end the first half and took a 22-9 lead into halftime.

TMP opened the second half with an 11-0 run and a Claire Schippers three-point play with less than five minutes left in the game tied the game at 30.

With 1:15 left in the game Brooke Koenigsman gave TMP a 34-32 lead on their way to a 38-36 victory.

Koenigsman scored a career-high 23 points to lead the Monarchs to the win.
